Urhobo College, Uvwie may have benefitted from a boardroom decision that secured their place in the final of the Delta State Principals’ Cup, and the team is determined to seize this opportunity.
The final of the tournament, sponsored by Zenith Bank Plc in collaboration with the Delta State Government, is set to take place on Thursday, November 6, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
Initially, Urhobo College lost 3-0 to Otokutu Grammar School in the semi-finals held at Government College, Ughelli. However, following a strong protest from the champions of Uvwie Local Government Area regarding Otokutu’s use of ineligible players, Urhobo College was granted the chance to compete in the final.
Under the guidance of Coach Fred Oteri, the team is fully prepared for the final. Reports indicate that they have been in training camp at Kenwood Hotels and Suites in Effurun, thanks to the support of an alumnus and philanthropist, Chief Idama Amurun, who is also the sponsor of the Sheriff Oborevwori U-17 Unity Cup. The team has been engaging in a series of friendly matches to ensure they are in top form, with full backing from the alumni association.
Urhobo College will face Warri South West Local Government Area champions, Ogbeijoh Grammar School, in the final. Meanwhile, Delta FA Chairman Chief Ken Nwanmocha has praised the organisers of the Zenith Bank/Delta Principals’ Cup, Hideaplus Limited, for their recent decision to disqualify a school for fielding an ineligible player.
The FA chairman stated that this move was a step in the right direction and will serve as a deterrent to other schools in the future.
“It is essential to maintain the standards and integrity of the tournament. We are all set for the final, and we hope that the Governor himself will be with us to celebrate the future football stars of the country,” Nwanmocha remarked.
