15 Games To Headline 2026 National Sports Festival As NSC Announces Opening Ceremony Date

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that the opening ceremony of the 2026 National Sports Festival, tagged the Coal City Games, will take place on 27 November, with the event running through to 11 December.

Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, announced the dates on Thursday during the inaugural meeting of the Main Organising Committee (MOC) in Abuja. He stated that participating states are expected to arrive between 25 and 26 November ahead of the official opening ceremony, stressing that the schedule is fixed and non-negotiable.

According to Olopade, the timeline was finalised following a productive engagement with the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, whose administration is hosting the festival.

He praised the governor’s commitment to delivering the necessary infrastructure, noting the pace at which facilities are being constructed and completed.

Olopade also expressed confidence that the 2026 edition will set new standards for funding and organisation in the history of the National Sports Festival.

He highlighted the role of Premium Trust Bank as the headline sponsor, commending the institution for fulfilling its financial commitments in what he described as a landmark contribution to the event.

Drawing comparisons with the previous edition held in Abeokuta, Olopade noted that the 2024 Gateway Games had been widely regarded as a benchmark for excellence. However, he maintained that Enugu is on course to surpass that standard with a better-funded and more efficiently organised festival.

As part of the NSC’s RHINSE reform agenda aimed at reducing the financial burden on host states, the number of sports has been streamlined to 20. Of these, 15 are designated as compulsory by the commission, while the remaining five will be selected at the discretion of the host state.

The compulsory sports confirmed for the Coal City Games include athletics, para-athletics, badminton, para-badminton, basketball, wheelchair basketball, boxing, cycling, football, judo, gymnastics, swimming, table tennis, para table tennis, tennis, taekwondo, mixed martial arts, weightlifting, para powerlifting and wrestling.

The 2026 Coal City Games are expected to draw athletes and officials from across the country, continuing the festival’s tradition as Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event.
