Ahead of the gubernatorial election in Imo State, a socio-political group, Imo Youths For A New Nigeria, has appealed to the 17 candidates to concentrate on issue-based campaigns and eschew violence.

Founder and spokesperson of the group, Chidiebube Okeoma, made the call while addressing newsmen in Owerri, the Imo state capital, yesterday.

Okeoma said the 17 gubernatorial candidates should concentrate on addressing issues bordering on insecurity, housing deficits, infrastructural decay, education, tourism, health and how to improve the dwindling economy of the people.

He appealed to the candidates to avoid heating up the polity, saying such will add to the already tensed up state.

Okeoma said, “The governorship candidates should avoid going personal on each other. They should avoid petty issues and concentrate on quality discussions that would address the Imo issues. The state is going through a lot and doesn’t need conversations and campaign activities that are not issue-based.

“Imo people want to hear from those who want to be their governor how they can solve the insecurity in the state. How the issue of infrastructure and housing deficits would be solved. How our health and educational decline would be solved.

“As a group, Imo Youths For A New Nigeria urges the 17 Governorship candidates to try to de -escalate the tension in the state. Their campaign topics should bother on pertinent issues affecting the state,” Okeoma said.
