NEC: APC Picks New National Chairman July 24

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has fixed the much-anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party for July 24 to pick a new national chairman.

This decision was taken at the NWC meeting where Ali Dalori, the deputy national chairman (North) of the party, formally assumed office as the acting national chairman after the resignation of Dr Abdullahi Ganduje.

Following Ganduje’s resignation, the North Central zone has reignited their clamour for the next chairman of the party to come from their zone.

The party had in 2022 zoned the position to the North Central zone which saw Senator Abdullahi Adamu from Nasarawa State emerge chairman.

Following Adamu’s resignation in 2023, Ganduje, the immediate past Kano State governor (North West) was appointed APC national chairman.

However, addressing journalists shortly after the meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Monday, the APC deputy national secretary, Festus Fuanter, said the NEC meeting will allow the party to nominate a fresh national chairman for the party.

Fuanter said, a notice for the NEC meeting has already been dispatched to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The deputy national secretary said; “Other issues that were discussed at the NWC also included preparations for our bye-elections in some of the states that members of the National Assembly, the Senate, the House of Representatives, the House of Assembly had died or had resigned. And so, preparations are in top gear to ensure that bye-elections are held in those areas.

“We also discussed our congresses that are forthcoming and as soon as the time comes, we’ll let you know. But in the interim, we have already rolled out our plans and we’ll soon be making them public as far as our positions are concerned, as far as congresses in states, wards, and local governments.

“Finally, the other very important aspect that we think you should also know is the approval of the notice for a NEC meeting, the National Executive Committee meeting. As you are all aware, the National Executive Committee is the apex body of the party. So, whatever it is that we do now, including the endorsement of the National Chairman, must also receive the blessings of the NEC.

“During the meeting, if they so desire that a new chairman is nominated, we’ll also accept such nomination and then wait for the convention where the final position of the party will be made as far as the substantive chairman is concerned.

“The suggested date for the NEC meeting is the 24th of July, 2025. It’s going to be here on the premises of the APC,” he said.
