Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo, has approved a N2 billion grant for infrastructural development at Edo State University, Iyamho, located in Etsako West local government area.
The governor also increased the institution’s monthly subvention from N100 million to N250 million as part of the efforts to strengthen its capacity and improve learning conditions.
Okpebholo made the announcement yesterday during the inauguration of the Ehi Aganmonmen Business Administration E-Library and the groundbreaking for the Peter Omoh Dunia Fitness Centre and the university’s health centre.
Describing the event as a defining moment for the institution, the governor said the projects reflected his administration’s commitment to repositioning the education sector.
He commended Chief Ehi Aganmonmen for donating computers and furniture to the e-library, noting that the gesture would enhance digital learning and academic excellence.
The governor also lauded Mr Peter Omoh Dunia for supporting the development of the fitness centre, describing it as a strategic investment in students’ wellbeing.
He further acknowledged contributions from stakeholders, including a parent who sponsored architectural designs and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adetimirin, who donated one month’s salary to support the projects.
According to Okpebholo, the state government’s ₦2bn intervention was in response to the collective commitment demonstrated by stakeholders.
He called for increased private sector participation in public development, stressing that government alone could not meet all developmental needs.
On healthcare, the governor expressed support for the university’s plan to upgrade its medical facility, noting that the proposed health centre would replace the existing sick bay and improve healthcare delivery within the campus.
He also charged students and management of the institution to ensure proper use and maintenance of the new facilities.
The projects, he said, align with his administration’s SHINE Agenda, which prioritises education, health, and infrastructure.
The governor also commissioned projects at Auchi Polytechnic, including an ICT hall, administrative blocks, and a sporting arena, all sponsored by Dunia.
Dignitaries at the event included the senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole; the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor; the Chief of Staff, Yakubu Musa; and former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, among other government officials.
