Don’t Be Used to Destroy Nigeria’s Democracy, Tambuwal Cautions Judiciary

Former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has cautioned members of the judiciary against allowing themselves to be used to undermine Nigeria’s democracy, warning that history will judge their actions.

Tambuwal gave the warning while addressing delegates at the convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he expressed concern over what he described as attempts to compromise key national institutions.

“We are in very interesting times in Nigeria today where pseudo-democrats have found their way to power and are now manifestly exposing themselves,” he said. “My appeal is not to members of the ADC for now, but to those who are leading our institutions, particularly the judiciary.”

Drawing historical parallels, Tambuwal referenced the role of the judiciary during the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, urging judicial officers to avoid actions capable of damaging the nation.

“Let me remind those of you who are living today of Justice Ikpeme that was used by the government to truncate June 12. Let no judge or justice allow himself to be used to destroy Nigeria,” he warned.

He stressed that judicial officers must remain conscious of their responsibilities, noting that both history and future generations would hold them accountable.

“History is taking note of our roles as individuals. Our children and grandchildren are watching and looking up to us to serve this country,” Tambuwal said. “Wherever you are writing your judgments or rulings, even if there is no individual by your side, God Almighty is watching over you.”

He further cautioned against external influence on judicial decisions, urging judges to resist pressure that could undermine the rule of law.

“Be wary of those individuals who will be talking to you to influence you to undermine our judicial system, undermine our country, and undermine democracy,” he added.

Tambuwal also used the occasion to call for unity among political leaders, noting the presence of key opposition figures at the gathering, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi.

“It is about unity of purpose and ambition for this country. It is not about an individual. It is about our vision and collective desire to rescue Nigeria. No sacrifice will be too great,” he said.

According to him, political actors must prioritise national interest over personal ambition and work collectively toward rebuilding the country.

“We must all work together towards a common mission of rescuing this country. And the ADC is that platform,” Tambuwal stated, urging members to preserve unity within the party.

He encouraged continued collaboration among stakeholders to achieve the shared goal of national renewal.
