An Arizona community college has apologised after a technical fault involving an AI-powered name-reading system disrupted its recent graduation ceremony.

The incident occurred on 15 May during the commencement ceremony at Glendale Community College, where the institution used artificial intelligence to announce graduates’ names.

Videos shared online showed confusion as students crossed the stage, with incorrect names appearing on screens or, in some cases, no names being announced at all.

College president Tiffany Hernandez addressed the audience during the ceremony, explaining that a “new AI system” was being used to read names. Her comments were met with boos from attendees. She later described the situation as a “lesson learned” and initially stated that graduates would not be able to re-cross the stage for corrected announcements.

The college later reversed its decision, allowing affected graduates to return to the stage while a human announcer read their names correctly.

Speaking to local media, graduate Grace Reimer said the experience felt uncomfortable and impersonal, adding that more thought should have gone into using AI for such a significant occasion.

The college has since issued a formal apology to graduates and their families following the disruption.
