Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has delivered a fitness update on his squad ahead of the Seleção’s international friendly against Nigeria next week.

Portugal are scheduled to face Chile on Saturday before taking on the Super Eagles in another high-profile friendly on Wednesday, 10 June.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Martinez confirmed that Manchester City defender Matheus Nunes will miss the clash against Chile after failing to recover sufficiently from injury.

The Portuguese coach, however, expressed optimism that the versatile player could return in time for the encounter with Nigeria.

“Unfortunately, Matheus Nunes is not yet fit to train, so he is out of the squad for tomorrow. This is not the time to take risks,” Martinez said, according to A Bola.

“We hope Matheus will be fit for the second game against Nigeria.”

Martinez also provided an update on João Félix, revealing that the former Barcelona and Chelsea forward would undergo a late fitness assessment before a final decision is made regarding his participation.

“João Félix will train, and we will make a decision afterwards, but I think it is a different situation,” he added.
