The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has handed site access to Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL) to start construction of two 330kV evacuation bays at the Kainji Transmission Substation in Niger State.

The company said the physical handover for the Kainji Switchyard Units 1G3 and 1G4 took place on Friday.

TCN general manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, who made this known on Sunday, said the construction — covering civil, electrical and mechanical works, plus testing and commissioning — will create 2x330kV bays intended to evacuate power from two new 110MW turbines.

Together, the turbines will add 220MW of generation capacity to the national grid once commissioned.

During the signing and handover ceremony on behalf of TCN, general manager, Materials Control and Stores, and chairman of the Project Technical Committee, Abdulkadir Gwaram Adamu, stated that the event marked a critical milestone and that its execution will enable TCN to evacuate power that will be generated by MESL’s new turbines on completion into the national grid.

He commended the management of Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited for their cooperation and commitment to improving electricity supply to Nigerians, noting that the project will be carried out wholly by MESL and at no cost to TCN. The project is scheduled to be completed by December this year.
