The Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN) says Africa will not be able to address its growing housing deficit unless it embraces innovation, technology and modern construction methods.

HDAN, organisers of the Africa International Housing Show (AIHS), made the call while announcing the launch of the AIHS Innovation Hub, a platform designed to showcase housing technologies, smart construction solutions and real estate startups.

The Innovation Hub will debut during the 20th edition of the Africa International Housing Show scheduled to hold from July 13 to 18, 2026 in Abuja.

Chief Executive Officer of the Africa International Housing Show, Festus Adebayo, said the housing sector must shift away from traditional approaches and adopt new technologies capable of delivering affordable and scalable housing solutions.

“Africa cannot solve its housing deficit with yesterday’s solutions,” Adebayo said, adding that the Innovation Hub is designed to connect innovators with governments, investors, developers and industry leaders.

He explained that the platform will highlight advancements in alternative building technologies, artificial intelligence in construction, smart homes, digital land administration systems, Building Information Modelling, green housing technologies, modular housing systems and renewable energy solutions.

According to him, startups and technology firms will also be given the opportunity to pitch their ideas directly to development finance institutions, commercial banks, venture capital firms, governments and international development partners.

Adebayo added that the Innovation Pitch Session will focus on solutions capable of reducing construction costs, improving efficiency and expanding access to affordable housing, particularly for low-income earners and informal workers.

He said the next breakthrough in housing delivery could come from young innovators and local tech firms, stressing that the Innovation Hub is designed to turn such ideas into real-world impact.

The 20th edition of AIHS is themed: “Housing Solutions for Low Income and Informal Workers in Africa” and is expected to attract participants and exhibitors from across the continent.
