UK Government Unveils Tax Cut for Pubs, Clubs, Live Music Venues

The UK government has announced a 20 per cent cut in business rates for pubs, clubs and live music venues in England, as Prime Minister Andy Burnham steps up efforts to ease the cost-of-living crisis and support struggling hospitality businesses.

The tax relief, which applies to a local levy paid by businesses, is the third major policy unveiled since Burnham took office on Monday. Earlier this week, his government announced plans to cap most bus fares across England and remove value-added tax (VAT) from household electricity bills.

The government estimates the latest measure will save about 32,000 hospitality businesses an average of £1,100 ($1,400) each year, although ministers have yet to explain how the tax cut will be funded.

Speaking during a visit to The Hare pub in Harlow, east of London, Burnham described the announcement as a significant first step in supporting the sector.

“We’re losing pubs. Pubs need to know that the cavalry is coming,” he said.

The Labour leader is under growing pressure to deliver the economic revival promised after the party returned to power in July 2024 following 14 years in opposition.

Industry leaders welcomed the move but said more action would be needed. Ian Hoskins, owner of the Ma Pub Group in Liverpool, called the savings “a drop in the ocean”, urging the government to overhaul the business rates system and put more money into consumers’ pockets.

Mark Davy, chief executive of the Music Venue Trust, described the tax cut as “an encouraging first step” for venues facing rising financial pressures.
