Five-time Grammy winner Angélique Kidjo has made history as the first African musician to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, dedicating the honour to the continent where she was born.

The Beninese music icon, 66, received the star during a ceremony in Los Angeles celebrating her four-decade career.

“This star is for all the continent of Africa. Because if I were not African, would I be here?” Kidjo told the BBC, reiterating her belief that African music and artists deserve greater recognition at home and around the world.

The singer also highlighted Africa’s influence on global music, pointing to the roots of genres including blues, R&B, rock and roll, soul and jazz.

Kidjo urged African countries to create stronger systems for supporting musicians and ensuring they receive the royalties they are owed.

The emotional ceremony saw Kidjo reflect on her parents, saying she wished they had been alive to witness the achievement.
