The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has raised the alarm over what he described as a sustained campaign of false whispers against him in rural communities in Northern Nigeria.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday and signed by the spokesman for the Peter Obi Media Reach, Idris Zekeri Jnr, Obi said he has credible intelligence that some individuals are still circulating falsehoods about his relationship with Northerners during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

According to the media office, the circulation of the false narrative has persisted despite what it called credible denials from Northern leaders resident in Anambra State, who have maintained that Obi has been and remains a supporter of theirs, both in and out of office.

“Despite clear facts, some individuals continue to covertly plant these false narratives at Northern gatherings, hoping that repeated claims will eventually seem convincing,” the statement said.
He challenged those behind the alleged campaign to provide verifiable evidence to support their claims, including names, dates and records.

“They should cease hiding behind whispered accusations and political propaganda. Peter Obi governed Anambra State for all its residents, regardless of ethnicity or religion. His relationship with Nigerians from the North was not based on the falsehoods now being fabricated for political gain,” it added.

The media office said the timing of the campaign was revealing, alleging that as the 2027 general election approaches, those unable to challenge Obi on competence and integrity were resorting to ethnic suspicion and misinformation.

“We urge our brothers and sisters in the North to seek facts, not rumours; evidence, not whispers; and policies, not propaganda. Nigeria cannot be rebuilt by weaponising lies that have long divided its people.

“Enough of the lies. Let the facts speak for a new Nigeria that is Possible,” the statement said.
