UNGA 81: Nigeria Retains Front-Row Seat Despite Tinubu’s Absence — Jimoh Ibrahim

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has dismissed concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s absence from the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), insisting that Nigeria will retain its front-row seat and continue to play a full diplomatic role at the global gathering.

Ibrahim said Vice President Kashim Shettima would lead Nigeria’s delegation to the high-level session on behalf of President Tinubu, while the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and other senior government officials would participate in key engagements throughout the General Assembly.

In a statement issued by the Nigerian Mission to the United Nations in New York, the envoy explained that it is a common diplomatic practice for presidents to be represented by vice presidents or foreign ministers when they are unable to attend the annual gathering.

According to him, more than 60 per cent of world leaders scheduled to address the ongoing UNGA session are not attending in person.

“More than 60 per cent of those listed to speak at the ongoing 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly are being represented by either their vice presidents or foreign ministers,” Ibrahim said.

He added that Nigeria’s position within the United Nations would remain unchanged despite the President’s absence.

“The Vice President and the Minister of Foreign Affairs are adequately positioned to represent Nigeria at the General Assembly and participate fully in the diplomatic engagements surrounding the session.”

Ibrahim also assured that Nigeria would maintain its designated seating arrangement at the Assembly, including its prominent front-row position.

Addressing public reactions to Tinubu’s decision not to attend, the ambassador said the President is currently in France on his annual leave and that his absence should not be misconstrued as a downgrade in Nigeria’s diplomatic presence.

“The absence of the President should not be interpreted as Nigeria being inadequately represented. Our delegation will continue to participate fully in the proceedings.”

He urged Nigerians to view the country’s participation through the broader lens of diplomatic protocol rather than the physical presence of the President.

“Nigeria will continue to play its role fully at the General Assembly,” Ibrahim said.

The United Nations General Assembly brings together world leaders annually to deliberate on global issues including peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, economic cooperation, and international governance. Nigeria is expected to participate in bilateral meetings, multilateral discussions, and other diplomatic engagements during the high-level week through its delegation led by Vice President Shettima.
