The Impacthive Centre for Accountability, Democracy and Rights (ICADAR), a civil society organisation, has condemned the killing of Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka in Katsina State and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
The Katsina State Police Command had confirmed that Masussuka was shot dead by suspected gunmen outside his residence in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area on Monday night.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Bello Ishaq, ICADAR described the deceased as a respected religious leader and advocate for peace, interfaith dialogue, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
The organisation said Masussuka devoted his life to promoting understanding across religious and community lines, encouraging dialogue and peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths and backgrounds.
It described his killing as a devastating loss to his family, congregation, community and others committed to peace.
“No disagreement, grievance or difference can justify the taking of a human life. Such violence causes profound pain and risks deepening fear and division at a time when communities need reassurance and security,” the statement said.
ICADAR extended its condolences to Masussuka’s family, loved ones, colleagues and other mourners, urging them to uphold the values of peace, tolerance, mutual respect and interfaith understanding that he championed.
The organisation called on the relevant authorities to conduct a prompt, thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his killing.
It also urged the authorities to ensure that anyone found responsible was held accountable through due process.
According to ICADAR, pursuing justice for the cleric and his family is essential to maintaining public confidence and preventing further violence.
The organisation urged communities to honour Masussuka’s legacy by promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence rather than allowing his killing to deepen divisions.
It said the values he championed should continue to guide efforts to build understanding among people of different religious and community backgrounds.
