Africa’s leading fertility centre, Nordica Fertility Centre, has successfully recorded over 5,000 babies born through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), since its establishment 20 years ago.
The managing director, Nordica Fertility Centre, Dr Abayomi Ajayi who disclosed this while speaking with LEADERSHIP at the 20th anniversary of the fertility clinic in Lagos, disclosed that the centre, which commenced operation in 2003, had seen successful conception and delivery of twins, quadruplets and quintuplets, despite challenges encountered in the fertility journey.
“From our humble beginnings on April 14, 2003 at the Victoria Garden City (VGC) and with a city centre clinic on Turton Street, Yaba, we have since established clinics in Asaba, Abuja, Surulere and Lekki (Fibroid Centre) to give easier and more convenient access to our services. This is a milestone in the history of our great brand, which over the years has assisted fertility challenged couples from all walks of life and all geographical locations within and outside the shores of Nigeria, resulting in the birth of thousands of babies and still counting,” he added.
Ajayi revealed that the journey started as a dream, adding that he felt that Nigerian couples who are battling with infertility needed to avail themselves of the latest technology in the fertility management space at the time.
“The pioneering efforts of a few of us then has led to the evolution of a world class practice in Nigeria comparable to any leading fertility centre in developed cities of the world.
“We are proud to say that our thrust to bring the latest technology, techniques and skills to bear on the fertility management landscape in Nigeria has seen us chart a course for innovative solutions to the benefit of our esteemed clients over the past 20 years,” he stated.
Speaking on a few notable achievements in the past 20 years, the medical director said the centre has introduced various male factor treatments including IMSI and PICSI to help men with low or immotile sperm parameters achieve assisted conception and had also introduced a very successful freezing facility to help women achieve conception at later dates which may be attributable to medical or lifestyle reasons such as cancer treatment. He noted that the review of their 2022 report showed a post survival rate of 92.2 per cent.
“Nordica Fertility Centre also cofound the Oncofertility Specialists Association Nigeria to promote Oncofertility awareness and research in Nigeria; heavily invested in minimally invasive procedures to resolve a myriad of fertility and non-fertility related challenges especially for our female clients and also invested in the first non-invasive solution for fibroid management on the West African sub region and the third on the African continent,” he revealed.
Looking at the future, the medical director said, “We see a tomorrow of infinite possibilities. A tomorrow where we will redefine service delivery to our esteemed clients by providing cutting edge technology aided by cutting edge people to give couples increased chances at getting their own children. Meanwhile, couples have applauded Nordica Fertility Centre, for helping them complete their bundle of joy.
A father of twins, Mr Agboola Lateef Olaitan, said that he got married in 2002, but all attempts to get his wife pregnant proved abortive. “My brother-in-law however introduced me to Nordica Fertility Centre. With just one cycle of IVF, we had a set of twins in 2011,” Olaitan affirmed.
