Veteran Nollywood actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo, has criticised the payment of acceptance fees by Nigerian schools, expressing concern over the financial burden the practice places on students from less privileged backgrounds.
Kanayo raised the concern during an appearance on *Honest Bunch*, where he questioned the rationale behind requiring students to pay acceptance fees after being offered admission into tertiary institutions.
The actor said he had received calls from financially disadvantaged Nigerians seeking assistance to pay acceptance fees after securing admission into schools.
He described the situation as difficult, particularly for families already struggling to meet the financial demands of education.
“Do you know sometimes some not-too-privileged Nigerians call you and say, ‘Uncle, I have not paid this acceptance fee. Can you help me?’” he said.
Kanayo questioned the commitment of the government and educational institutions to making education accessible, arguing that the additional financial requirement could create difficulties for students who had already earned admission.
He said the situation had become a difficult challenge for Nigerians, particularly those who could not afford the extra charges.
“So it’s a very hard situation we got ourselves into,” he added.
