Afrobeat: Johnny Crown’s Cross-Continental Sound

For a long time, cultural duality has been a discourse of endless talks worldwide, especially in the Nigerian music industry. However, one thing that remains invaluable as this conversation continues like infinite numbers is cultural grounding. Cultural grounding is the practice of staying deeply connected to one’s cultural heritage, values, and traditions, even when living in a different cultural environment. One of the popular artists even has a special day when he’s celebrated in Atlanta, yet he remains connected to his roots.

Culturally grounded Afrobeats artists in Nigeria connect deeply to their roots by celebrating African identity, preserving local languages, and blending traditional and modern sounds. Beyond music, many of these artists explore themes peculiar to African realities, such as economic challenges, awareness of local struggles, and culture, among others. By embedding cultural storytelling, proverbs, and personal narratives in their lyrics, they preserve Nigerian heritage. This, among many other acts, has made Afrobeats a highflyer, also exporting our culture to the world. Among these Afrobeats artists is the talented Johnny Crown.

Born on January 21, 1997, in Brooklyn, New York, Johnny Crown Omolade embodies a rich blend of Nigerian and American roots, hailing from both Brooklyn, New York, and Lagos, Nigeria. His educational journey took him from Christland School in Ikeja, Lagos, where he completed his primary education, to Queens, New York, where he attended Beach Channel High School and later Far Rockaway High School. Johnny further honed his creative talents at New York University, graduating in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Media, Culture, and Communication. Johnny is acclaimed among his peers for his work ethic. While juggling his studies in a “saner clime,” he still puts in his all to be the best, which eventually paid off.

Beyond academics, Johnny’s interests are deeply varied—ranging from acting, writing novels and music, to his passion for sports like basketball and football. These pursuits feed into his creative identity, blending artistic expression with a love for movement and teamwork. This has earned him the unconventional title – Odogwu of Versatility. It is quite understandable that even with all he does, he keeps his musical talents and career at the forefront. Johnny is keen on becoming one of the Afrobeats stars who have stayed true to the craft and culture. One skill that some artists possess, which has kept others afloat, is songwriting. Johnny’s pen game is lit, as this has been one of his integral secrets to his notable emergence.

It’s a stale saying that Afrobeats is now global. Afrobeats artists keep penetrating different continents, selling out stadiums and revered halls, and collaborating with other A-list artists from Europe and America. This highlights the greatness of the genre. When it comes to the meteoric rise of Afrobeats, Johnny sees it as a long-awaited acknowledgment of African music’s global impact. He believes Afrobeats isn’t merely influential; it’s reshaping how the world engages with rhythm, culture, and storytelling—showcasing Africa’s unique musicality on an international stage. He believes that the patriarchs of the genre have put in the work, introducing the world to the continent and its realities through music. This aligns with the popular motivation that in life, turning lemons into lemonade is essential.

ID Cabassa, a popular and revered Nigerian producer, once noted that inspiration is germane to an artist, stressing that no art comes from oblivion except if the artist wants to risk their mental health. Johnny’s journey into music was shaped by a lifelong rhythm that resonated deeply within him. Growing up, he was drawn to the storytelling power of music, finding that it could transport him and others to new emotional depths. Today, he channels that inspiration into his sound, creating music that resonates with authenticity and aims to leave listeners as moved as he once was. Soon, beyond his dreams, his art will inspire emerging Afrobeats artists to step up and leave their mark too.

In diverse industries, many have specific mentors, while others share Johnny’s belief regarding mentorship. Johnny admires role models who use their art to push boundaries, remaining genuine while making an impact. For him, it’s less about fame and more about meaningful influence—those who inspire through creativity and personal integrity, making their mark while staying true to their roots. However, this doesn’t negate the fact that Johnny has respect for others in the industry. He often praises every artist in the industry who has faith in the genre, the work, and the people of his roots.

In one of his thought-provoking projects, Drunk EP, Johnny goes figurative, yet real. He delves into complex themes of escapism and self-reflection. It explores the idea of “drunkenness” not merely as intoxication by alcohol but as a metaphor for being consumed by life’s highs, lows, and everything in between. Through each track, Johnny takes listeners on a journey through moments of raw vulnerability, capturing the hazy, emotional complexity of being “drunk” on life’s experiences. The EP reflects his desire to create music that is honest, unfiltered, and deeply personal, resonating with the shared human experience.

Johnny Crown has shown the world that, as an artist, he deeply values the power of storytelling in music as a form of “rhythmic art.” Through his lyrics, he creates vivid narratives that strike a chord with listeners, blending his personal experiences with widely relatable themes. His music isn’t just about entertainment—it’s an experience, guiding audiences through tales of struggle, victory, and raw emotion. With each beat, Johnny forges a meaningful connection with his fans, proving that his chosen genre is as much about masterful storytelling as it is about rhythm and flow. Every verse strengthens his reputation, not only as a musician but as a storyteller of our time, showcasing a deeply rooted African identity, even in the diaspora, leaving messages that resonate well beyond the final note.
