The 1995 set of Williams Memorial Secondary School, Afugiri, Umuahia, known as Integrity Group, has awarded scholarships to 16 students of the school.
The scholarships were awarded to the best three students from junior secondary 2 to senior secondary 3 and students with special needs.
Presenting cheques to the students yesterday at the school, the president of the alumni, Sunny Megwara, said the initiative was designed to encourage healthy academic rivalry and excellence.
He said the 1995 set which comprised professionals in various fields both at home and in the diaspora, thought it wise to give back to the school that made them what they had become.
“Other plans in the pipeline are installation of solar powered lights in the hostels, re-roofing of some classroom blocks, provision of seats and equipping of the library,” he said.
Responding, the acting principal of the senior secondary school, Patrick Agwu, thanked the set for the initiative and urged the students not to abuse the opportunity.
“The school is highly impressed with the great work you have done and the plans for your alma mater even in the face of the present economic situation in the country,” Agwu said.
He also encouraged the Old Students Association to sustain its benevolence to the school and urged the parents and guardians to complement teachers’ efforts in teaching the students.
The benefitting students and their parents expressed gratitude to the set and prayed God to continue to bless, protect and reward them for the gesture.
