The Labour Party (LP) candidate in the Anambra State governorship election, George Moghalu, has lost the race in his polling unit in Uruagu Ward 1, Nnewi North Local Government Area of the State.

At polling unit 017, which has 463 registered voters, only 86 were accredited for the November 8 governorship election on Saturday.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, won the unit with 57 votes, while Moghalu of the LP polled 22 votes.

Speaking earlier with journalists at his residence in Nnewi North LGA, Moghalu expressed concern over reports of widespread vote-buying despite what he described as a heavy deployment of security personnel across the state.

“The situation is scandalous and very embarrassing. The issue of vote-buying is no longer a speculation. It happened very aggressively in the last by-election, and this time around, I’ve been receiving reports of the same thing happening,” he said.

Governor Soludo, on the other hand, described the election as largely peaceful, noting that only a few polling units experienced minor technical challenges.

He said reports from across the state indicated that voting was progressing smoothly, though “some polling units recorded minor glitches with the BVAS machines.”

“I got a report from Orumba South that the BVAS wasn’t working as expected. But all said and done, I think, on the average, it is going on smoothly,” Soludo added.
