Persons living with disabilities (PWDs), in collaboration with association of widows in Nigeria have called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint woman as the minister for humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation.
Speaking at a democracy day press briefing in Abuja, the chairman Northern Youth Disabilities Forum, Mohammed Musa Zaria urged the president to look in the direction of women with credible humanitarian activities like Halimat Adenike Tejuosho to head the ministry of humanitarian since she already has a well known track record.
He said Tejuosho has impacted a lot on the lives of the people and used her resources to cater for the less privileged, persons with disabilities, internally displaced persons and widows.
Zaria stated that the appointment should go to the person with unwavering commitment and support to the community of PWDs and less privileged in Nigeria.
He said that the minister must have leading efforts aimed at alleviating poverty and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations across the country.
Zaria emphasized that the community request is unprecedented, underscoring the critical importance of having a leader who understands and prioritizes the challenges faced by PWDs and marginalized groups.
He stated that the appointment would strengthen the government’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunities and support for all members of society.
The group also appreciated the president for standing with the PWDs in all their activities before the election and even after their elections.
Speaking on Nigeria democracy day, the group appreciated the federal government for recognisning June 12, as democracy day, and eulogised MKO Abiola for his contribution to democracy.
