Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has described the late former President Muhammadu Buhari as someone whose genuine concern for the poor stood out during their interactions.
Speaking in Daura on Wednesday, July 16, when he paid a condolence visit to the Buhari family, Obi reflected on his personal encounters with the former president, especially during the 2023 campaign season.
“I was fortunate to meet him during the campaign,” Obi recalled. “And from our discussions, one thing I took away was his sincere idea and desire to care for the poor. It was not about politics; he truly wanted to see the lives of ordinary Nigerians improved.”
Obi, who arrived in Daura a day after the state funeral, explained that logistical challenges, including the closure of Katsina Airport for security reasons, prevented him from attending the burial held on Tuesday, July 15.
He urged Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s legacy beyond politics and to focus on the values he represented. “This is not the time for political bickering. It is a time for unity and sober reflection. Death unites us all.”
Obi’s tribute adds to the chorus of voices across party lines that have continued to highlight different aspects of President Buhari’s personality and leadership, especially his emphasis on simplicity, integrity, and concern for the underprivileged.
