Cornerstone Insurance Plc Foundation has commissioned a solar-powered borehole for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Abuja as part of efforts to support the agency’s operations and promote access to clean and sustainable water.

The company said the initiative formed part of its corporate social responsibility programme aimed at improving public health, promoting renewable energy and supporting institutions rendering critical services to society.

Responding shortly after the commissioning, NDLEA’s director of technical services, DCG Ambrose Umoru, who represented the chairman and chief executive of the agency, Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd), described the donation as a gesture of partnership and goodwill.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, head of marketing and corporate communications group at Cornerstone Insurance Plc, Cordelia Ekeocha, said the foundation was committed to implementing projects that create lasting impact for beneficiaries.

She noted that access to clean water remains a major challenge in many communities across Nigeria, adding that the provision of solar-powered boreholes offers a sustainable solution without dependence on unreliable electricity supply or high fuel costs.

“At Cornerstone Insurance Plc Foundation, we believe that all our initiatives should have a lasting impact in the lives of recipients,” she said.

According to her, the project was designed to provide safe, clean and accessible water while encouraging the use of renewable energy for sustainable infrastructure.

Ekeocha added that the initiative would also help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower carbon emissions associated with diesel-powered systems.

She explained that the intervention aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on clean water and sanitation as well as climate action.

“The work of NDLEA is very important. So, as part of our CSR, we decided to build this borehole for the agency,” she said.

She stated that the company chose solar technology because of its sustainability and ability to provide uninterrupted access to water.

“Water is something everybody needs. Part of this initiative is to make sure the agency, whatever you are doing in this location, you have clean and sustainable water,” Ekeocha added.

She also commended officials of the anti-drug agency for their efforts in combating drug abuse and trafficking in the country.

DCG Umoru said access to safe water was essential to the health and effectiveness of officers as well as the communities they serve.

“Safe water is essential to the health and effectiveness of our officers and the community we work alongside,” he said.

Umoru noted that the support from Cornerstone Insurance would strengthen the agency’s operational capacity and further demonstrated the importance of collaboration in tackling social problems.

“This support directly strengthens our capacity to serve,” he added.

According to him, the intervention showed that the fight against drug abuse and trafficking requires collective responsibility from both public and private institutions.

“It shows that the fight against drug abuse and trafficking is not ours alone. It takes collaboration from all sectors of society,” Umoru stated.

He assured that the facility would be properly maintained and effectively utilised for the benefit of officers and other users.

The commissioning reflects growing private sector participation in supporting public institutions through social infrastructure projects targeted at improving welfare and sustainability.
