A Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of a 43-year-old businessman, Teryima Dooluum, at the Nigeria Correctional Service Centre, Makurdi, for allegedly killing Suega Iorshagher at a drinking joint.
Dooluum, residing Behind RCM Primary School, Gajir, Tombu Village in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue, faces charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.
During the court appearance, the defendant did not take a plea due to a lack of jurisdiction.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Kelvin Mbanongun, adjourned the matter until March 14 for further mention.
The Prosecution Counsel, Insp Godwin Ato, informed the court that the case was transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters, Buruku, to the State CID, Makurdi, on Nov 20, 2023, via a letter dated the same day.
Ato explained that Ternenge Iorshagher, the younger brother of the deceased, reported the matter at the police station on Nov 15, 2023. According to the complainant, while sitting at a drinking joint with his elder brother, Suega Iorshagher, at Ikyo Begha Settlement, Tombu Village in Buruku, a gang of eight led by Yandev Akaangee attacked and fatally stabbed Suega with an axe.
The Prosecutor revealed that the gang leader, Akaangee, was previously arrested and arraigned at Chief Magistrates’ Court 1. Dooluum, who had been at large, was recently arrested during further police investigation, while others are still at large.
The charges filed against Dooluum contravene sections 97 and 222 of the penal code laws of Benue, 2004.
