Traders at Section C of the Dei-Dei Scrap Market in Abuja have appealed to the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, to intervene in the illegal demolition of the section’s only public toilet to make way for a set of shops.

The traders said the demolition had left thousands of them and their customers without access to basic sanitation, forcing many to seek alternatives outside the market.

Speaking with journalists yesterday, the chairman of the market, Chief Kenneth Okoye, described the development as a major public health concern.

He warned that the absence of toilet facilities could expose the market community to disease outbreaks.

Okoye said the only toilet serving the section was demolished by a trader who has commenced the construction of six shops on the site.

“Our people deserve dignity. A major market in Abuja cannot function without toilets. Women, the elderly and customers are the most affected,” he said.

He warned that the situation could trigger outbreaks of cholera and other sanitation-related diseases if urgent action is not taken, describing it as a “time bomb” waiting to explode.

The market leader called on the FCT minister to direct the immediate restoration of the demolished facility and provide additional toilets to meet the needs of the growing population of traders and visitors.

Okoye expressed confidence in Wike’s commitment to infrastructure development, noting that the minister had earned the nickname “Mr Projects” through his ongoing transformation of the FCT.

He also commended the minister’s efforts in improving infrastructure across Abuja, insisting that traders in the Dei-Dei market support the administration’s development agenda.

He urged the FCT Administration to act without delay, stressing that restoring the toilet facility would improve public hygiene, protect the health of traders and customers, and demonstrate the government’s commitment to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
