In a remarkable achievement, the Dolphins Women’s Basketball team have clinched their second Zenith Bank/NBBF Women’s League title, dedicating their victory to the memory of the team’s late founder, Wale Aboderin.
Aboderin, who passed away on May 30, 2018, made significant investments in the team, including the construction of a clubhouse and gymnasium. Olumide Oyedeji, the current director of the team and a former Olympian, expressed his joy in leading the team to this momentous title, affirming that Aboderin would be proud of their accomplishment.
“Reaching this milestone highlights the foundational work that our founder undertook during his lifetime, and I am honoured to be part of this historic moment,” Oyedeji remarked. “I witnessed Aboderin’s commitment to the team while I was still playing, and it is crucial that we continue his legacy. He would never want to see the team falter.”
The Dolphins secured their championship by defeating First Bank 61-55 in the final held on Saturday, September 20, at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, preventing their opponents from claiming a prestigious tenth title.
The final was attended by prominent figures, including Dame (Dr) Adaora Umeoji, CEO of Zenith Bank, alongside other senior bank executives and notable guests such as NBBF Chairman Musa Kida and Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission.
