The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE) has emphasised the critical importance of adhering to standards in the sustainable energy sector as a key driver of Nigeria’s economic growth and development.

At the NIEEE’s commemoration of World Standards Day 2024, themed “Harnessing Standards for Sustainable Energy and Economic Growth in Nigeria” executive vice chairman and CEO of NASENI, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, highlighted that aligning with global best practices ensures that innovations in sustainable energy are accessible nationwide.

“Standards not only enhance our economy but also support the deployment of innovations, contributing to our development goals,” Halilu stated. He added that by maintaining these standards, Nigeria could strengthen industries, create jobs, and secure a prosperous future for all.

The event, officially declared open by the NASENI Chairman, focused on how standards could propel the nation towards its sustainable energy objectives.

NIEEE president, Felix Olu, underscored the importance of standards, codes, and guidelines in energy development. He identified key stakeholders in the sector, including producers, suppliers, policymakers, practitioners, and consumers, all of whom were represented at the event.

“I am pleased to announce that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission is here to represent consumers’ interests, while the Energy Commission of Nigeria is present to emphasise the government’s role in policymaking. Experts from Arseni, who develop tools and technologies for practitioners, are also here to ensure energy standards are globally recognised,” Olu said.

He encouraged active participation, stressing the value of contributions from all stakeholders for a productive session.

The event also marked the opening of the 2024 International Conference and Exhibition on Power and Telecommunications (ICEF 2024), the 20th edition. Olu congratulated attendees and looked forward to welcoming more participants as the event progressed.
