World football governing body, FIFA, has once again celebrated the extraordinary brilliance of Nigerian football legend Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, reaffirming that the former Super Eagles captain still holds the record for the highest number of successful dribbles in a single FIFA World Cup match.
More than three decades after his unforgettable display at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Okocha’s remarkable feat remains untouched, further cementing his legacy as one of football’s most gifted entertainers.
According to FIFA, Okocha completed an astonishing 15 successful dribbles during Nigeria’s dramatic Round of 16 clash against Italy, a performance that has yet to be surpassed in World Cup history.
The milestone becomes even more impressive considering the calibre of opposition the Nigerian maestro faced. Italy’s defence at the time featured some of football’s most celebrated names, including Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Demetrio Albertini, yet Okocha repeatedly dazzled with his trademark flair, close control and fearless attacking play.
FIFA noted that despite the emergence of numerous elite dribblers over the years, Okocha’s record remains firmly intact.
Former Brazilian forward Jairzinho and ex-England midfielder Paul Gascoigne sit joint second on the list after recording 13 successful dribbles in a single World Cup fixture.
The world football body also highlighted several iconic names recognised among the competition’s greatest dribblers, including Eusebio, Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona and Germany’s Jamal Musiala.
While Argentine superstar Lionel Messi holds the record for the highest number of successful dribbles across multiple World Cup appearances with 125, the late Maradona remains the player with the most successful dribbles in a single tournament, recording 53 during the 1986 World Cup campaign.
