A Gender Advocacy Group, Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), has called on journalists to raise awareness about women’s economic inclusion and gender accountability in government through their reporting.

The Executive Director of GSAI, Adaora Sydney-Jack, made the call in Abuja at a one-day Capacity Building Workshop for Reporters and Editors.

She explained that the purpose of the training is to enhance reporting and editorial coverage of government performance and shortcomings from a gender accountability perspective.

“We have gathered here for a crucial purpose, which involves the inclusive training of 40 reporters and editors from across the country, representing various media platforms: TV, radio, print, and online. Our aim is to ensure that gender accountability takes center stage. This will be achieved by reporting on stories that shed light on disparities, discrimination, and injustices faced by marginalized communities.

“By amplifying these narratives, we can challenge societal norms, break down barriers, and inspire action toward a fairer and more inclusive world.

“The journey ahead is challenging, but it promises to have a lasting impact. We are here to make a difference, and your dedication to this cause is greatly appreciated.

“Together, as journalists and media professionals, we can create a more equitable future, where gender accountability is not just an aspiration but a reality.

“We urge all of you to stand with us as we strive for a world where gender is no longer a barrier to success, where opportunities are accessible to all, and where inclusivity is the norm.”

Adaora emphasized, “Our goal is to empower media professionals to independently promote and advance women’s rights, gender accountability, and hold the government accountable for its actions.

“We also aim to encourage and support story projects and reports that highlight the shortcomings in the performance of public office holders, as well as the political and economic performance of Nigeria.”

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, stated that the workshop is designed to open your eyes and stimulate your storytelling abilities to recognize deficiencies in well-intentioned government policies and programs, whether at the national or subnational level, that may need adjustments for the better.
