Residents of Enugu have resorted to sack farming following the high cost of vegetables in the city’s various markets. Our findings revealed that this innovative technique has gained popularity in different parts of Enugu.

Our exclusive investigations revealed that the cost of vegetables, usually the  fresh edible portions of certain herbaceous plants—roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruit, or seeds—is very exorbitant.

It was further gathered that the cost of the smallest heap of pumpkin leaves is now sold at N1000 while the prices of other variables sold between N500 and N1000 before are now sold at between N1, 500 and N2,000 respectively.

Our findings further revealed that many residents of Enugu are now carrying out sack farming in their different flats to reduce their reliance on the markets for their vegetables.

A sack farmer residing at Mary Land Housing Estate, Mr Ignatius Okonkwo, later discovered that the system is the easiest way of producing vegetables.

” My brother, before I embarked on sack farming I taught that it is not possible for vegetables to grow inside the sack but now I’m enjoying the farming because it is less expensive and does not create room for too much stress.

‘I just harvested my vegetables after three months. Now I have planted more vegetables, and hopefully, I may harvest enough to eat and sell in the market. The cost of vegetables is very exorbitant.

I’m happy that people are now doing sack farming in their flats, it does not cost much to do this farming and it does not stop you from doing other things,” he stated.

Another resident, Mrs Abigail Nnenna, who lives at Kenyatta in Enugu South LGA, said that since she started sack farming, she has not bought any vegetables in the market.

Abigail, a civil servant, said she was forced to go into sack farming by the exorbitant cost of vegetables in the markets, adding that when she learnt that sack farming can  be carried out even in flats both upstairs and downstairs, she quickly embraced the opportunity.
