How I Overcame Determination Led Me Out Of Polygamous Hardship

I grew up in a polygamous household where love, rivalry, and survival often blended into one indistinguishable rhythm. My earliest memories were shaped by the quiet resilience of my mother, who eventually left when I was just eight years old.

At that age, I could not grasp the weight of her decision, but much later I learned that deep, unending tensions with my father’s extended family had pushed her to her limits.

Before she walked away, my father had already married two additional wives. From my mother’s branch of the sprawling family tree, we were a trio of children. Altogether, we were eleven young souls navigating competition, affection, and the uneven terrain of a home where loyalties often shifted.

My father, despite the chaos that swirled around him, valued education profoundly. He wanted all his children to succeed. But love for learning did not erase the reality of constant comparison. For my siblings and me, the absence of our mother meant the lack of a shield. We learned early how to stand for ourselves, how to survive without a defender.

Yet, in the midst of that turbulence, God was kind. We were brilliant children, especially in our primary school years. But brilliance alone doesn’t pay its own way—especially not in a polygamous home.

When I entered secondary school, Mathematics became my unexpected battlefield. In my junior classes, I loathed it, convinced it was a cruel subject designed to expose students’ weaknesses. But somewhere along the line, curiosity replaced fear, and the struggle transformed into determination. I began seeking help from my seniors, carving out extra hours after classes, pushing myself until the formulas that once intimidated me began to dance effortlessly in my mind.

The discomfort paid off. I not only became one of the best in Mathematics, but I also made an “A” in WAEC—a victory that felt like a personal reclaiming of confidence.

That success marked the beginning of the next chapter in my life. I studied Accountancy at Yaba College of Technology in Lagos and pushed myself even harder. Before I reached HND 1, I had already passed ICAN—an achievement many considered unusual at that level. It was proof that the resilience forged in hardship had found productive direction.

After graduation, I worked with an accounting firm in Lagos, laying the foundation for a career I had once only dreamed of. But dreams grow wings with time. Mine took me across the ocean to Chicago, USA, where I am now based. Each step—each exam, each struggle, each early morning and late night—became a brick in the bridge that carried me from a tense polygamous home in Nigeria to a thriving professional life abroad.

When I look back, the journey feels bigger than survival. It is a story of grit, grace, and the unyielding belief that beginnings do not dictate destiny. I rose from a home defined by rivalry to become a man described by determination.

And in every victory, I still see the boy who once feared Mathematics, who once felt unprotected, who once watched his mother leave—but who refused to let any of that define the future.
