Shem Obafiaye, the retired Deputy Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has disclosed the reason behind his not wearing an official kit during his recent decoration for his promotion to the top position.

He revealed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday.

Obafiaye, who has retired from active service, explained that despite not being officially adorned with the new position, he was granted the rank by the President and the Minister of Interior, along with the Commandant General, even after his retirement.

The retired Deputy Commandant-General was elevated to the position by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, alongside two of his colleagues: Fasiu Adeyinka and Raji, both former commandants.

Reflecting on the viral ‘Oga at the Top’ video that gained global attention and impacted his life, Obafiaye admitted to the psychological effect the incident had on him. He revealed that his cousin’s words, stating that national recognition often comes with national embarrassment, helped him navigate through the challenging period.

Clarifying misconceptions surrounding his departure from service, Obafiaye emphasized that he was not sacked but rather redeployed after the infamous interview incident in 2013. He emphasized that following the interview, he was instructed by his superior to take a one-month rest before being reassigned to the Oyo State Command.

Addressing the legacy of the viral ‘Oga at the Top’ video, Obafiaye shared that he and his wife secured a patent for the catchphrase. He humorously mentioned that any unauthorized use of the slogan without permission would require financial compensation.

The ‘Oga at the Top’ video surfaced in 2013, featuring Obafiaye struggling to recall the NSCDC’s website during an interview. The short clip quickly gained traction on social media, leading to remixes, merchandise, and widespread attention.

Obafiaye’s revelation regarding his retirement and the backstory of the viral video sheds light on the events that shaped his tenure and public image during his time with the NSCDC.
