Former governorship aspirant, Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi, has formally defected to the Action People’s Party (APP), declaring the platform as his choice to contest the 2027 Imo State governorship election.

Amadi, popularly known as Mazi Gburugburu, announced his defection at a well-attended ceremony held at Community Primary School, Umuekwenne, Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area, where he officially registered as a member of the APP.

Speaking at the event, Amadi said his decision to join the APP was driven by what he described as the failure of governance in Imo State, stressing that the party offers a credible and untainted platform for genuine political renewal. He said the state, despite its human and natural endowments, has suffered years of mismanagement, insecurity and economic decline.

According to him, governance in the state has been reduced to slogans and publicity, with little impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. He lamented that insecurity has continued to disrupt economic activities, forcing businesses to shut early and communities to live in fear.

Amadi said poverty in Imo State is not a product of indolence but the result of policies that do not reflect the realities on the ground, adding that traders, artisans, graduates and young people have been pushed to the brink by unemployment and poor economic planning.

He also decried the decay of infrastructure across the state, noting that dilapidated roads and neglected public facilities have discouraged investment and deepened hardship for residents. The governorship hopeful further criticised corruption and waste in public office, describing governance as a system that rewards loyalty over competence.

Explaining his defection to the APP, Amadi said the party remains free from godfatherism and entrenched political interests, making it a suitable platform for people-driven leadership. He said the APP represents a clean break from what he termed recycled politics and compromised opposition structures.

The former aspirant outlined his agenda to include improved security through community-based strategies, economic reforms to support small businesses and job creation, massive investment in infrastructure, and transparent governance anchored on accountability and service.

Amadi called on Imo residents to mobilise ahead of the 2027 elections, urging them to reject what he described as poor governance, insecurity and economic hardship by voting for change. He expressed confidence that the APP would emerge as a viable alternative capable of restoring stability and development to the state.
