The inspector-general of police (IGP) Olatunji Disu has directed senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to adopt proactive, intelligence-driven and adaptive policing approaches in tackling the country’s evolving security challenges.

The police chief gave the directive during the monthly conference of strategic senior officers of the NPF held yesterday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Disu acknowledged that Nigeria continues to contend with multiple security threats, including kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, terrorism, banditry, farmer-herder conflicts and cyber-enabled crimes.

He stressed the need for stronger leadership, enhanced coordination, and more effective operational responses to ensure the police remain ahead of criminal elements.

The IGP said since the last strategic conference in May 2026, the NPF had recorded notable operational achievements across the country.

According to him, police operatives arrested eight suspected terrorists, 55 kidnapping suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, 29 murder suspects and 42 suspected cultists.

He further revealed that 88 kidnapped victims were rescued during various operations, while the officers recovered 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition, and 28 stolen vehicles.

IGP Disu also directed commissioners of police nationwide to intensify intelligence gathering, deepen community policing efforts, and institutionalise regular engagement with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, market associations, transport unions and other community-based organisations.

He noted that public trust and community partnership remain critical components of effective policing and sustainable crime prevention.

Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to professionalism and accountability, the IGP urged the senior officers to lead by example, enforce discipline within their commands, prioritise personnel welfare and ensure strict adherence to established operational procedures.
