The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, of allegedly opposing the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, over what the group described as political calculations ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued on Sunday, IPOB claimed that Soludo’s position was influenced by an alleged ambition to secure a vice-presidential slot ahead of the next election cycle.

The group argued that the governor’s actions and comments suggested a shift from earlier calls associated with efforts to secure Kanu’s freedom.

IPOB maintained that Kanu’s continued detention would not address security concerns in the South-East and insisted that dialogue and political solutions remained necessary to achieve lasting peace in the region.

The group also criticised what it described as attempts to politicise the agitation for Kanu’s release, insisting that the matter should not be tied to electoral considerations or future political alignments.

The latest allegation adds to existing disagreements between IPOB and the Anambra State Government over security management and differing approaches to addressing unrest in the South-East.

Soludo’s administration has previously rejected claims that the governor is opposed to Kanu’s release, maintaining that he supports lawful and constitutional efforts capable of promoting stability in the region while separating criminal activities from legitimate political advocacy.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no immediate reaction from the Anambra State Government to the latest allegation.
