Iran Frustrate Belgium In Gritty Goalless Draw To Keep World Cup Hopes Alive

Iran produced a disciplined defensive display to hold Belgium to a 0-0 draw in their Group G clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, earning a valuable point and keeping qualification hopes firmly in their own hands on Sunday.

In a match short on goals but not on tension, Belgium dominated possession for long periods yet failed to find a way past a resolute Iranian side determined to avoid defeat.

The Red Devils nearly made the perfect start when Romelu Lukaku threatened inside the opening minutes, but Iran’s defence stood firm and gradually settled into the contest.

Iran thought they had found a breakthrough midway through the first half when Mehdi Taremi found the net, only for a VAR review to rule the effort out, ensuring the sides remained level.

The Asians continued to frustrate Belgium with a compact defensive structure, while midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi typified their battling spirit in the centre of the park.

Belgium pushed for a winner after the break, but clear-cut opportunities proved difficult to create against the well-organised Iranian backline. Matters became more complicated for the Europeans in the 66th minute when defender Nathan Ngoy was dismissed, leaving his side to finish the match with 10 men.

Despite enjoying a numerical advantage for the final stages, Iran were unable to find the decisive goal, while Belgium also lacked the cutting edge required to break the deadlock.

The result leaves Group G finely balanced heading into the final round of fixtures, with both nations still in contention for a place in the knockout stages.

For Iran, the draw will feel like a hard-earned reward for their defensive resilience and tactical discipline. Belgium, meanwhile, will be left frustrated after failing to convert their superiority into victory and must now secure a positive result in their final group match to strengthen their hopes of reaching the Round of 32.
