Dutse Airport Into A Cargo Hub

Dutse International Airport stands as one of Nigeria’s standard-compliant aviation facilities, built with careful attention to aviation safety protocols.

Currently, Governor Malam Umar Namadi is spearheading efforts to convert the airport into a fully operational cargo hub.

Commissioned in 2014, Dutse International Airport has maintained an impeccable safety record, with commercial and private aircraft landing safely without any incident since its inception.

Upon assuming office, Governor Namadi prioritised converting the facility into a cargo airport to support the state’s economic transformation agenda.

This initiative aligns with Jigawa’s emergence as a major producer of rice, wheat, sesame, and hibiscus in Nigeria.

The proposed upgrade aims to facilitate the import and export of agricultural products, including Halal meat, to international markets, a development expected to boost both state and national economies significantly.

Just last Sunday, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) conducted a facilities tour and routine inspection of the airport to ensure compliance with safety standards.

According to Mr Miri Selzin, a General Manager at NAMA’s Calibration Centre, the mission focused on verifying navigational aids and ensuring compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.

The inspection included ground checks and performance assessments of equipment to certify optimal operations.

This inspection comes at a crucial time, as the Jigawa State Government has secured the necessary approvals from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for the airport’s upgrade to cargo status.

Strategically located, Dutse International Airport is positioned to serve numerous states across Northwest and Northeast Nigeria. Its transformation promises substantial impact through job creation, poverty reduction, facilitation of international heavy goods transportation, and enhanced socioeconomic development.

The state’s peaceful environment and stability present additional advantages for the airport and prospective businesses that will utilise it as a cargo destination once operations commence.

Jigawa State, recognised as one of Nigeria’s most investor-friendly states, continues to benefit from Governor Namadi’s efforts to create an enabling environment for investors.

These initiatives include various waivers, expeditious approvals of Memoranda of Understanding, and streamlined documentation for business establishment.

This policy framework means investors and businesses will utilise the airport with reduced tax burdens, guaranteed security of life and property, and assurance of comprehensive, effective service.

During NAMA’s inspection exercise, Governor Namadi commended the agency’s proactive approach to safety through the calibration process.

He further revealed ongoing discussions between Jigawa State and FAAN regarding the installation of cargo facilities at the airport, in preparation for the full launch of cargo air services.

The Jigawa government reiterated its commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities by ensuring all necessary airport facilities meet operational standards.

What particularly distinguished the inspection visit was Governor Namadi’s pronounced emphasis on and dedication to promoting aviation safety protocols.

It is widely acknowledged that substandard facilities or non-compliance with aviation regulations could precipitate accidents resulting in unforeseen damages, including loss of life and property.

In the aviation industry, the enduring slogan remains “Safety First”—a principle that precedes timely and quality service delivery, and represents the primary consideration for customers when selecting air service providers.

Governor Namadi’s demonstrated commitment to promoting and supporting safety protocols at Dutse International Airport, which is destined to become a cargo hub, offers encouragement and signals new opportunities for aviation customers.

Beyond the enumerated advantages of Dutse Airport, it is crucial to recognise that maintaining standards through regular upgrades must be established as an ongoing policy rather than merely a project, ensuring long-term sustainability.

While confidence abounds in Governor Namadi’s commitment to his word, the public’s fervent hope is to witness the launch of Dutse International Airport as a cargo hub as soon as possible, enabling communities to reap the benefits that will serve generations to come.
