Former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has charged the political class to support the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and avoid overburdening the agency to enable it to fulfill its mandate effectively.
Speaking at the Niger Delta Stakeholders Summit 2024 held at Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt at the weekend, he highlighted the crucial role of the NDDC in fostering development, peace and inclusive governance in the oil-producing states.
He said, “As an intervention agency for the oil-producing states, the NDDC holds the mandate to bring development closer to the people, fostering hope, peace and inclusive governance. The NDDC was established out of necessity, with a strategic role to improve the environment, provide infrastructure and enhance the livelihood of the people in the region.
“With the current leadership of the NDDC, people from the Niger Delta have seen rays of hope. Therefore, I encourage the political class not to overstretch the NDDC so it can perform optimally.”
Jonathan said the NDDC had made significant strides under its current leadership, bringing hope and infrastructure improvements to the region.
