The Kano government has signed a N21.29 billion contracts for the rehabilitation of Tamburawa and Challawa water treatment plants to enhance access to portable water in the state.

Dr Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim, Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, said this at the signing of the contract agreements, on Thursday in Kano.

Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf had earlier approved N21.29 billion for comprehensive rehabilitation of the key water facilities aimed at revitalising the state’s water distribution network and address longstanding infrastructure challenges.

Muhammad-Hashim said the contracts were awarded to two Chinese construction companies: CGC and CCECC Nigeria Limited, respectively.

He said the first project for rehabilitation of Tamburawa water treatment plant and restoration of the raw water pump station, at the cost of N9.9 billion, awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited.

The commissioner said that rehabilitation of the Challawa raw water pump station and water treatment plant, alongside the restoration of the Goron Dutse reservoirs, awarded to the CCECC Nigeria Ltd would cost N11.39 billion.

Muhammad-Hashim underscored the importance of timely delivery, and urged the contractors to ensure completion of the projects within the eight-month time-frame.

He expressed confidence in the technical competence and capacity of the companies to execute the projects in accordance with the contract specifications.
