The Kano State Government has earmarked N214,839,309,263.70 to reposition the health sector in the 2026 fiscal year, representing 15.04 per cent of the state’s approved budget.

The Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Sulaiman Shanono, disclosed this on recently during a press briefing on the breakdown of the 2026 approved budget, signed into law by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on January 1, 2026.

Shanono said the N214.8 billion allocation is part of the N1.477 trillion 2026 budget tagged “Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development,” which seeks to consolidate ongoing reforms and stimulate human capital development across sectors.

He explained that N91.36 billion was approved for the Ministry of Health, while N12.9 billion was allocated to the Primary Health Care Management Board (PHCMB) to strengthen healthcare delivery at the grassroots.

According to him, major health projects include N25 billion for the procurement of strategic medical equipment for secondary and tertiary facilities, N19.5 billion for the construction of additional hospitals across the state, and N2 billion for free maternal and child healthcare services.

The government also set aside N500 million each for the procurement of hospital ambulances and the provision of ambulances to the 44 local government areas, as well as N400 million for the State Emergency Medical and Ambulance System.

Other allocations include N500 million for the completion and equipping of the Cancer Centre at Giginyu General Hospital, N1.5 billion for hernia operations across the state, and N473.5 million for the construction of new Intensive Care Units at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital.

Shanono added that funds were approved for routine immunisation, vulnerable healthcare programmes, epidemic and pandemic preparedness, public health laboratory construction, solarisation of health facilities, and emergency response to extreme weather events.

He noted that the health sector investment aligns with the administration’s commitment to providing accessible, affordable and quality healthcare services to Kano residents.

…State’s Ramadan Programme Feeds 1.1m In 10 Days

The Kano State Government Ramadan feeding programme has provided meals to over 1.1 million residents across the eight metropolitan local government areas within the first 10 days of the holy month.

Chairman of the Feeding Programme Committee and Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Sheikh Ahmed Tijjani Auwalu, disclosed this recently after inspecting feeding centres in Fagge, Nassarawa and Gwale local government areas in the state.

Auwalu said the initiative was established by Governor Abba Yusuf to cushion the effects of economic hardship on vulnerable residents during Ramadan.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Enlightenment, Government House, Kano, Usman Gwadabe, the chairman, through the Committee Secretary and Special Adviser on Administration, Akibu Isa Murtala, stated that 115 approved feeding centres are distributing 1,000 food packages daily to the needy.

He expressed satisfaction with the performance of food vendors engaged for the programme, noting that most have adhered strictly to contractual specifications to ensure hygienic standards and quality meals.

The commissioner added that vendors found breaching contractual agreements were cautioned and have since complied with the required standards.

Auwalu commended Governor Yusuf for increasing the number of feeding centres from 95 last year to 115 this year, describing the expansion as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to supporting the less privileged during Ramadan.

He appealed to residents to continue praying for the state and the nation, while noting that reports from other ad-hoc committees supervising the exercise indicated that the programme was progressing smoothly across centres.
