British monarch, King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to make a state visit to the United States in late April, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.
The visit will include a meeting with President Donald Trump, a state dinner at the White House, and an address by the King to the US Congress.
The royal couple will also stop in Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory, on their return.
This will be the first official UK state visit to the US since Queen Elizabeth II’s visit in 2007, marking a significant milestone in the UK-US bilateral relationship.
Buckingham Palace said the trip will celebrate historic connections and modern cooperation, coinciding with the US’s 250th anniversary of independence.
Observers are also watching to see if King Charles will meet his son, Prince Harry, who lives in the US.
The visit followed President Trump’s September 2025 visit to Windsor Castle, which both leaders described as warm and cordial. Trump said at the time, “He honoured me and our country… we had an amazing time. I think he’s fantastic, and I’m looking forward to hosting him at a state banquet.”
Tensions remained, however, over issues like the war in Iran, with Trump recently criticising the UK over the Strait of Hormuz, saying, “The USA won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us. Go get your own oil!”
Such disagreements raised questions about the timing of the visit. Public opinion is divided, with a YouGov survey showing 49% of Britons opposing it while 33% supporting it.
The visit also comes amid calls from US Congressman Ro Khanna for King Charles to meet survivors of Jeffrey Epstein, following the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
Despite the controversies, Buckingham Palace confirmed planning was proceeding, with the King representing the UK government on the visit, signalling an effort to strengthen ties with the United States and navigate diplomatic tensions.
