Kwankwasiyya Dismisses Report Of Kwankwaso’s Planned Exit From NDC

The Kwankwasiyya movement has dismissed reports suggesting that its national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is planning to leave the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following the party’s decision to review and replace some candidates earlier submitted by the group in Kano State.

Speaking on the controversy, the spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya movement, Dr. Habib Sale, said there had been no official discussion or decision regarding Kwankwaso’s purported exit from the party.

Sale said reports claiming that the former Kano State governor had threatened to dump the NDC were merely media speculation and had not emanated from the movement or its leadership.

“As for our leader leaving the party, I think he has not discussed that with anybody. There has never been any official position on that issue. Largely, we have seen it in newspapers and on social media just like every other person,” he said.

The spokesperson also maintained that the process that produced the Kwankwasiyya-backed candidates was duly concluded during the party’s primary election held on May 29.

According to him, all candidates who emerged through consensus during the exercise were affirmed without objections from stakeholders at the time.

“There was never any decision as to what would happen because the party conducted its primary election on the 29th of last month. Today, it is already over a week since all the processes were concluded, and the candidates who emerged through consensus were affirmed on that day.

“At that particular time, we did not receive any complaints that people had been excluded. The process was concluded and submitted to the party. It is now up to the party to take whatever action it considers lawful and in line with its regulations,” Sale stated.

His remarks followed reports that the NDC had replaced several candidates initially submitted by the Kwankwasiyya bloc in Kano over an alleged breach of a power-sharing arrangement between the group and the party’s existing structure.

A document signed by Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, indicated that the changes were made to reflect an earlier agreement allocating 60 per cent of elective positions and party offices to the Kwankwasiyya bloc and 40 per cent to the original NDC structure.

The development has fuelled speculation about possible tensions within the alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Although the Kwankwasiyya movement insists that no decision has been taken regarding the future of its relationship with the party.
