Bayer Leverkusen have secured the long-term future of highly rated midfielder Francis Onyeka after handing him a new contract before approving a season-long loan move to Bundesliga newcomers SV Elversberg.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has signed an extension that will keep him at the German champions until the summer of 2032.

The agreement comes on the back of an impressive loan spell with VfL Bochum in Bundesliga 2, where Onyeka emerged as one of the division’s most exciting young talents.

The Nigerian-born player scored eight goals and registered one assist in 30 league appearances, attracting interest from several clubs across Germany with a series of consistent performances.

Elversberg, newly promoted to the Bundesliga, moved swiftly to secure his services as they prepare for their maiden campaign in the German top flight.

The club views Onyeka as a key addition capable of providing creativity and attacking impetus as they battle to retain their Bundesliga status.

Speaking after signing his new deal, Onyeka described the contract extension as a major milestone in his career and expressed excitement about the opportunity awaiting him at Elversberg.

“The contract extension at Bayer 04 is a great honour for me and, at the same time, further motivation,” Onyeka told the club’s official website.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge at Elversberg and to proving myself week in, week out in the Bundesliga.”

Born in Gummersbach, Onyeka reiterated his ambition to eventually establish himself in Leverkusen’s first team, describing the opportunity to play for the club as a lifelong dream. The new agreement reflects Leverkusen’s confidence in his potential and long-term development.
