The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified mobilisation efforts in Kaduna State ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the party targeting 1.5 million registered members across the state before the end of October.

The party also declared support for former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate, while hinting at a possible alliance with former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Speaking during the first expanded Kaduna State Executive Committee meeting of the party held at Pyramid Hotel, Kaduna, the State chairman of NDC, Mordecai Sunday Ibrahim, said Nigerians were tired of the economic hardship, insecurity and poor governance under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He accused the APC-led federal government of worsening the nation’s socio-economic challenges since assuming power in 2015.

According to him, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has aggravated the hardship faced by Nigerians through policies he described as anti-people and anti-democratic.

The chairman said the party had successfully established structures across the 255 wards in Kaduna State and would unveil its state secretariat within the next five days.

He disclosed that the party had increased its membership target from 500 to 1,500 members per ward as part of efforts to strengthen its grassroots presence ahead of the elections.

Ibrahim also directed members defecting from other political parties to submit resignation letters from their former parties before seeking elective positions under the NDC platform.

He urged members to make sacrifices towards building the party, noting that opposition parties thrive largely on the commitment and support of loyal members.

Also speaking, a governorship aspirant of NDC, Ibrahim Hussain Abdulkarim, said the meeting was convened to strengthen party structures and deepen engagement among aspirants and party officials.

He said the gathering brought together thousands of party officials, including ward and local government chairmen, state executives and aspirants contesting various elective positions.

Abdulkarim said youths in Kaduna State were eager for a new political direction, adding that the NDC was providing a platform driven largely by young people and women.

He described the reported Obi-Kwankwaso alliance as a combination capable of inspiring confidence among Nigerian youths.

The governorship aspirant also lamented the growing division along religious lines in Kaduna State, stressing that the state’s diversity should serve as a source of strength rather than conflict.

Abdulkarim further called on older political elites to allow younger leaders take greater responsibility in governance while serving as mentors and advisers.

He also urged youths not to distance themselves from politics, insisting that active participation remained critical to shaping the country’s future.
