Abia State sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Paul Ugwu, has said there is nothing spiritual about road accident, blaming it on ignorance, carelessness and recklessness among other causes.

Ugwu who spoke to LEADERSHIP Weekend yesterday on the level of preparedness by the sector for the ember months in Umuahia, added that the months are no exception to the causes.

He attributed major causes of road accident across the country to over speeding, over loading, and use of unsafe and second-hand tyres by drivers which he argued were very necessary to avoid.

He said with the arrival of the ember months, the sector had since commenced enlightenment campaigns and advocacy visits to motor parks across the state on the need for caution by drivers while on the roads.

The commander, who said the visits were in line with the corps’ theme for this year’s ember months which is, “Avoid over speeding, over loading and use of unsafe tyres,” added that the advice can’t be overstressed.

He, therefore, called on road users to ensure their vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles are in good condition before moving them to the road, noting that most accidents could have been avoided.

Ugwu also cautioned road users against plying the Aba-Umuahia lane of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway to access the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board office from Ubakala Junction.

He said the explanation became necessary following incessant accidents, warning that the sector had drafted some personnel to the lane to apprehend defaulters.
