The National Sports Commission (NSC) and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have thrown their weight behind the Renewed Hope Unity Cup, describing the grassroots football initiative as a potential catalyst for national unity, talent discovery and youth development.

The endorsements came yesterday at the unveiling of the tournament’s logo, with both bodies pledging support for the competition designed to bring together teams from all 774 Local Government Areas of Nigeria.

Representing NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, the Commission’s Director of Facilities, Dr Muhammad Rabiu, said the decision to use football for the initiative was significant given the sport’s popularity and unifying influence in Nigeria.

Rabiu said the NSC was proud to be associated with the project and described the logo as more than a visual identity.

“The logo is beyond just an image; it’s a symbol. Anytime you see this, you begin to look at the faces here,” he said.

He also highlighted the Federal Government’s increased investment in sports facilities, saying the NSC now had more than ₦200 billion for facilities, compared with a period when maintenance funding had been zero for four consecutive years.

Rabiu, on behalf of Dikko, thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support for Nigerian sports, adding that the Commission wanted Nigeria to become Africa’s leading sporting nation.

Similarly, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, represented by Sokoto State Football Association Chairman, Muhammed Nasir, congratulated the organisers and welcomed the competition as an opportunity to strengthen grassroots football.

Nasir said football remained a powerful unifying force capable of transcending ethnicity, religion, political affiliation and social status.

He said the tournament could complement the NFF’s talent identification efforts while promoting teamwork, discipline, leadership, resilience and peaceful competition among young Nigerians.

The NFF urged the organisers to maintain high standards of fairness, transparency, professionalism and inclusiveness, expressing hope that the competition would develop into one of Nigeria’s premier grassroots football tournaments.

Earlier, National Coordinator and Convener, Dr Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, said the tournament would provide opportunities for young players, particularly those from rural and underserved communities, to attract the attention of professional clubs, academies and international scouts.

Kwande said participating teams would receive equipment and welfare support, while matches would be professionally produced and streamed digitally.

He added that a nationwide Train-the-Trainer programme would equip selected coaches from the 774 LGAs with modern coaching education, creating a sustainable grassroots football development network.

He described the initiative as “a bold national investment in Nigeria’s future”.
