The leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) have commended the athletes of Team Nigeria for their exceptional performance at the ANOCA Zone III Games in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
Over five days of intense competition across four sports—badminton, taekwondo, weightlifting, and wrestling—Team Nigeria showcased their dominance, securing a total of 16 gold medals, three silver medals, and two bronze medals.
The Director General of the NSC, Honourable Bukola Olopade, praised the athletes for prioritising the nation’s interests by competing with focus, discipline, and determination.
“I would like to salute each and every one of you, including your coaches, for overcoming numerous challenges to achieve this remarkable feat of 16 gold medals. I assure you that the country is proud of you, and your hard work is greatly appreciated and will not go unrecognised,” Olopade said in a statement released to journalists by his media aide, Kola Daniel, yesterday.
“The NSC, under the chairmanship of Mallam Shehu Dikko and myself, will continue to collaborate with the Nigeria Olympic Committee to ensure we prioritise the welfare and development of the country’s athletes.”
“I firmly believe that when we take care of our athletes, they will reciprocate with medals, aligning perfectly with the mandate entrusted to us by Mr President to build a sustainable sports economy,” he added.
The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Engr Habu Gumel, also lauded the team for their impressive performance in Burkina Faso, expressing gratitude to the Sports Commission for facilitating the athletes’ participation in the competition.
“The athletes have performed exceptionally well and have represented both the country and the zone admirably. I am confident that this competition, along with the athletes’ performances, will provide valuable preparation for many of them ahead of next month’s Solidarity Games in Saudi Arabia.”
“The NSC and NOC share the objective of ensuring that our athletes are exposed to various international competitions before major events such as the Commonwealth Games, the All Africa Games, and the Olympic Games,” he concluded.
