Former Super Eagles captain Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha has revealed that an age restriction and Bayern Munich’s refusal to offer him a written contract scuppered his proposed move to the German giants in 1991.

Okocha, speaking on the ObiOne Podcast, said Bayern became interested after he impressed while playing for their youth team at a tournament in Switzerland.

However, Bundesliga regulations at the time required players to turn 18 before July to be eligible to sign a professional contract for that season. Okocha’s birthday was in August, meaning he would have had to wait almost a year before becoming eligible.

According to the Nigerian legend, Bayern offered him only a verbal arrangement, under which he would train with the first team and play for the reserves while waiting to turn 18.

Uncomfortable with relocating from Nigeria without a formal agreement, the teenager asked the club to put the arrangement in writing, particularly to protect him in the event of injury or dismissal.

“I asked them, ‘Can you put it in writing on paper? Because I can’t come all the way from Nigeria to rely on a verbal contract. What if I get injured and you tell me to go home? I’ll have nothing?’” Okocha recalled.

He said Bayern rejected his request, leaving him with little choice but to turn down the opportunity.

Okocha subsequently joined third-tier side Borussia Neunkirchen before Eintracht Frankfurt presented him with a more structured offer during the winter transfer window.

The deal included a one-year amateur contract followed by a two-year professional agreement, which Okocha accepted.

His move to Frankfurt marked the beginning of a remarkable Bundesliga career that would eventually establish him as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers.
