The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has graduated 62 inmates who successfully sat for the National Examination Council (NECO) and the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) examinations.
The graduation ceremony, held under the inmates’ continuing education programme, was part of broader efforts to rebrand and reposition inmates as productive members of society upon release.
According to a statement by Public Relations Officer of the Kano Command, CSC Musbahu Nassarawa, the initiative aligns with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019, which promotes access to formal education and vocational training for inmates as a pathway to rehabilitation.
Speaking during the event, the Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Ado Inuwa, commended the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche for his steadfast commitment to inmate welfare.
He directed all custodial centres under the command to fully engage inmates in the educational and vocational programmes available to them.
Inuwa also commended Governor Abba Yusuf-led Kano State Government for supporting educational opportunities for inmates, noting that some of the graduates achieved credit passes in key subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
“This milestone is not only a testament to the resilience of the inmates but also a sign that the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is taking root in correctional practices,” Inuwa said.
Representative of the Governor at the event, the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Faruk, expressed satisfaction with the progress being made in rehabilitating inmates through formal education.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting custodial education initiatives, describing them as vital to reintegration and public safety.
