The Nigerian wrestling contingent, brimming with confidence and national pride, has departed from Abuja for the highly anticipated 2026 African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt.

The team, a formidable mix of seasoned athletes and rising stars, is poised to continue Nigeria’s dominant legacy on the continental stage, with a particular focus on extending their unparalleled reign in the women’s category.

The delegation, comprising ten female and eight male wrestlers, along with a dedicated team of coaches and officials, jetted off from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport yesterday. They are set to compete across eighteen explosive categories spanning the U17, U20, and Senior divisions.

Dr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, delivered a powerful and inspiring farewell address to the athletes. He lauded their unwavering discipline and dedication demonstrated during their rigorous training camp, urging them to carry that same spirit into the competitive arena in Egypt.

“I want to appreciate all of you for the report of discipline and dedication you exhibited during your stay in camp. That is the spirit you have to showcase in Egypt,” Dr. Adeniyi affirmed. He underscored the immense significance of their mission, particularly in the women’s division, where Nigeria boasts an astonishing record of 14 championship titles – an unprecedented achievement in Nigerian sports history. “Heading into these championships, we are the current women champions, and we have to try our best to bring the title home for the 15th time.”

Dr. Adeniyi further reminded the athletes of their crucial role as national ambassadors, imploring them to uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship and discipline. “Continue to believe in yourselves and do your best and maintain a high level of discipline to make the country proud,” he urged. His parting words resonated with a clear mandate for victory: “We implore you to do your best and ensure that Nigeria’s flag is hoisted in Alexandria victoriously.”
